Working With the Elements Palette in Camunda Modeler
Working with the Elements Palette The Elements Palette is the set of tools on the left-hand side of the Canvas that allows you to add to and layout BPMN elements in your diagram. The Upper Palette The Hand Tool (Shortcut Key 'H') is used to pan around the Canvas. The Create/Remove Space Tool (Shortcut Key 'S') is used to create or remove space between elements on the Canvas. The Lasso Tool (Shortcut Key 'L') is used to select multiple elements on the Canvas. The Global Connect Tool is used to connect elements together (e.g. Associations, Message Flow, Sequence Flow). Camunda Modeler will choose the appropriate connector for the shapes you are connecting. The Lower Palette The tools on the Lower Palette allow you to add BPMN Elements to the Canvas. Navigate With the Minimap in Camunda Modeler
Navigate With the Minimap If your diagram is larger than what is visible on the screen, the Minimap tool allows you to navigate your diagram without having to zoom or scroll. To activate the Minimap, click on the Map icon in the upper-right corner of the page. The Minimap will appear in the upper-right hand corner of the page. Click anywhere on the Minimap to navigate to that portion of the diagram. The blue rectangle represents the visible portion of your diagram. Click on the Map icon again to deactivate the Minimap. Camunda Modeler Navigation Overview
Navigation Overview The screenshots below are annotated with the names of the major User Interface (UI) elements of Camunda Modeler. Append Elements Context Menu The Append Elements Context Menu appears when you click on an element on the canvas and then click on the Create icon (Blue Plus). It allows you to add and connect new elements quickly, on-the-fly. (See Working with the Append Elements Context Menu for more information.) Autosave Configuration Use the Autosave Configuration to enable and set how frequently Camunda Modeler will automatically save your work. Canvas The Canvas is the workspace where you build BPMN diagrams. Context Pad The Context Pad appears when you click on an element on the canvas. It allows you to quickly change the type of element, connect to other elements, set the color, and more. (See Working with the Context Pad for more information.) Elements Palette The Elements Palette provides access to BPMN Elements and layout tools. Simply drag elements from the Elements Palatte onto the Canvas. (See Working with the Elements Palette for more information.) Minimap The Minimap displays a tiny image of your entire canvas and all of its content. This offers a quick way to see where you're currently working on your canvas. You can also use it to navigate and zoom around the canvas. Properties Panel The Properties Panel provides space to add Documentation to an element on the canvas. (You can toggle the Properties Panel open and closed with Shortcut Keys Ctrl + P). Token Simulation Toggle Use the Token Simulation feature to see how the process will behave when it is executed. (See What is a Token & Why Do I Need a Token Simulator for more information.) Working With the Append Elements Context Menu The Append Elements Context Menu allows you to quickly add new Elements that connect directly to your selected Element on the Canvas. This feature streamlines the process of building and expanding your process model. How to Access the Append Elements Context Menu Select an Element on the Canvas. Look for the Append Element icon(s) next to the selected Element. These icons look like a blue circle with a plus sign. Hover over an Append Element icon to reveal the Context Menu. Append Task Append Gateway Append Intermediate/Boundary Event Append End Event Add Text Annotation Append Element - Open a searchable menu of all valid Elements you can add. Note: Append Element icons only appear if the selected Element can have additional elements connected to it. An example of using the Append Elements Context Menu to add elements to a process model. Working With the Context Pad in Camunda Modeler
Working With the Context Pad When you click on an Element on the Canvas, a helpful toolbox called the Context Pad appears above it. This pad offers quick access to various actions you can perform on the selected Element. What can you do with the Context Pad? Change Element: Transform your selected Element into a different kind of Element. Connect to Other Element: Create links between different Elements on your Canvas. Set Color: Customize the appearance of your Element by changing its color. Delete: Remove the selected Element from your Canvas. Manage Pools & Lanes: When a Pool or Lane is selected, you can add a Lane or divide the Pool/Lane. Change Element Select the Element you wish to change. From the Context Pad, click on the Change Element icon (it looks like a rectangle on top of a circle). A list will appear showing the types of Elements available to choose from. (This list is context-sensitive, meaning it changes based on the type of Element you selected.) Select the new Element Type you want, and your Element will transform instantly. A example of using the Context Pad to change a Gateway type and a Task type. Connect to Other Element Select the Element you wish to start the connection from. From the Context Pad, click on the Connect to Other Element icon (it looks like an arrow). Your cursor will change to indicate you are in connection mode. Move your cursor to the Element you want to connect to. Click on the target Element to complete the connection. An example of using the Context Pad to connect to another element. Set Color Select the Element you want to set the color for. From the Context Pad, click on the Set Color icon (it looks like a paintbrush). Choose the desired color from the color picker. The selected Element will immediately change to the new color. An example of using the Context Pad to set the color of an Element. Delete You can also use the Delete key to delete an Element. Select the Element you wish to remove. From the Context Pad, click on the Delete icon (it looks like a trash can). The selected Element will be immediately removed. Special Context Pad Options for Pools & Lanes When your selected Element is a Pool or a Lane, the Context Pad displays an additional set of icons: Add Lane Above: Inserts a new Lane above the selected Pool or Lane. Divide Into Two Lanes: Splits the selected Pool or Lane into two equal parts. (Available only for undivided Pools or Lanes) Divide Into Three Lanes: Splits the selected Pool into three equal parts. (Available only for undivided Pools) Add Lane Below: Inserts a new Lane below the selected Pool or Lane. An example of using the Context Pad to add Lanes to a Pool.
