Why Camunda Modeler Instead of Visio?
Why Camunda Modeler Instead of Visio (or Another Tool)?
Question: Why has Swinerton decided to use Camunda Modeler for process models instead of some other tool (e.g. Visio, Lucidchart, etc.)?
Answer: One of the key advantages of Camunda Modeler is its support for BPMN 2.0 XML, which enables easy import and exchange of process models with other Business Process Management Systems (BPMS). This compatability ensures that our process models can be imported and adapt to any future BPMS solutions that we may chose to adopt as both our process maturity and organization grow. Another significant factor is the focused nature of Camunda Modeler. Unlike general-purpose diagramming tools like Visio or Lucidchart, Camunda Modeler is specifically designed for creating process models. This focus approach eliminates unnecessary formatting, features, and shapes that can prolong the learning curve, confuse users, or lead to the inclusion of elements that are not relevant to the process modeling context.
That said, our choice of Camunda Modeler does not replace Visio outright. Visio is still an excellent choice for producing organization charts, non-BPMN flowcharts (e.g. value stream maps, decision trees, cause and effect diagrams, etc.), network diagrams, UML diagrams, data flow diagrams, and more. Camanda Modeler just does one thing (and does it well): BPMN process models.
